SYMPOSIUM GOAL: The objective of the symposium is to bring together various sectors of the deep sea (e.g., fisheries, energy exploration and development, mining, biotechnology, ocean exploration, engineering, marine scientists, and maritime attorneys) to discuss current advancements and future needs of working and undertaking scientific investigations in the deep sea.

Session A – Governance and Legal Considerations
Session B - Energy and Mineral Exploration and Development
Session C - Deep-Sea Technology Research and Development
Session D - Climate Change and Ocean Acidification
Session E - Fisheries and Ecosystem Sustainability and Conservation
Session G - Biotechnology

LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE: The symposium will be a joint organization of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries (DOP) of the University of the Azores and the Regional Government of the Azores.

PROCEEDINGS: Peer-reviewed papers from the symposium will be published in the summer of 2010 in a special volume of the ICES Journal of Marine Science.
